Crossings Healthcare Solutions Streamlines Electronic PN Orders at Baycare Health System
BayCare Health System, based in Clearwater, Florida, recently implemented Crossings Healthcare Solutions’ Parenteral Nutrition (PN) Advisor with great success.
Within weeks, the tool helped BayCare solve problems enabled by their prior paper processes. PN provides life-sustaining nutrition for certain patients through an intravenous or intra-arterial line. With this high-alert medication, the ordering process can be complex and lengthy, making it crucial to avoid errors.
BayCare is focused on an entire continuum of care across acute care, post-acute care, and community-based care. The health system comprises 15 hospitals and more than 380 care locations.
Before implementing Crossings’ PN Advisor, BayCare relied on paper forms. The system had minimal standardized PN practices and no ingredient lists in the EMR.
BayCare required a solution that:
- Enabled PN ordering within PowerChart
- Provided a view of previous PN orders and labs
- Offers downstream automation in compounding
- Is time-neutral for pharmacists
BayCare realized the Crossings PN Advisor checked all the boxes and more. “We are always looking for innovations to achieve healthcare excellence,” says Joe Walton, BayCare Pharmacy Informatics Coordinator. “Our processes needed standardization as they were inconsistent.”
The PN advisor solution
Using the Cerner platform, the PN Advisor offers an easy electronic ordering process with built-in decision support. Its intuitive workflow allows for custom and pre-mix PN ordering processes.
The tool features Smart Templates that can aggregate data from multiple chart locations into one, easy-to-read format.
The PN Advisor was developed to enhance communication between disciplines and to assist in reduction of adverse events such as hospital-acquired conditions and readmissions. It includes electronic order verification for nursing during administration to minimize errors.
Other highlights include:
- Reference range guidance and previous day PN comparison
- Ability to place relevant lab orders for the next day
- Age-based calculations and flexing based on age
- Flexing based on facility product availability
Quick positive results
The PN Advisor did not take long to benefit BayCare Health System, with 100% of PN ordered through the Advisor. The tool is implemented in 34 hospitals nationwide with greater than 90 percent adoption.
“It’s been a very successful go-live for BayCare. Crossings was great, responding to all of our concerns, and putting in fixes and optimizations in the interim between our go-live and now,” says Walton. “It has improved the workflow for all our users. We are moving very fast with all of this and it was very successful.”
